Pre-Denture and Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

Pre-Prosthetic / Denture Surgery - The preparation of your mouth before the placement of a prosthesis (e.g. a denture) is referred to as pre-prosthetic surgery.

Over time, the shape and size of the jawbone changes, starting when a tooth is lost.  These changes can result in dentures that slip, click and cause pain. The irritation caused by ill-fitting dentures can cause further changes in the bone or the gum tissues.

Dr. Young will review your needs and options with you during your consultation appointment.  Procedures to prepare your mouth for a denture include:

  • Bone smoothing and reshaping
  • Removal of excess bone
  • Bone ridge reduction
  • Removal of excess gum tissue
  • Removal of impacted teeth
  • Soft tissue grafting

Placement of dental implants - after careful evaluation of your problem, Dr. Young may also decide that implants are desirable to restore proper function - please see the implant and bone grafting sections of this website for more information.
